Self-Harm in Young People: Guidance and Support for Parents
Next week, we are running a free, online workshop on self-harm for parent carers, designed to give you clear information, practical guidance, and a safe, compassionate space to explore a difficult and often worrying topic.
Supporting a child or young person who may be self-harming can feel overwhelming, frightening, and isolating. Many parent carers are unsure where to turn or how best to help. This workshop is here for you.
It is suitable if your child or young person is currently self-harming, may be at risk, or if you have concerns for the future. You don’t need to have all the answers - this session meets you exactly where you are.
Designed with the parental perspective at its heart, the workshop acknowledges the complex emotions you may be feeling and provides supportive, non-judgemental guidance. Our aim is to empower you with understanding and realistic ways to support both your child and yourself.
The session will explore:
An overview of self-harm, including key statistics
What self-harm is, and the different ways it can present
Possible triggers and underlying factors
The functions of self-harm - what it may be helping the young person cope with
How to start difficult conversations, with practical and transferable tools
How to respond to a disclosure, including helpful language and what to avoid
Alternative strategies and supportive approaches to stop self-harm
Satveer Nijaar, from ‘Attention Seekers?’ will lead this workshop. Satveer has over 10 years’ experience in leading training on self-harm awareness, empowering participants to have a deeper understanding of the difficult choices adolescents face when coping with the challenges of growing up and providing the skills to offer empathetic, effective support.
Self-Harm Workshop, Tuesday 10th February, 7pm-9pm
Please note - due to the nature of the topic, the session on self-harm will NOT be recorded. In addition, to keep this as a safe space for families to ask questions, this session is not open to professionals.
