360° Outreach Project for Schools and Families Term 4

Our 360° Outreach project supports schools and families working together to build a picture of the “whole child” and better understand the child’s needs.

Our peer support team visit participating schools, running coffee support sessions where families are able to find out more about SGPC and the support that is available to them locally as well as connecting with other families within their own school community.

Both staff and families from the participating schools also have access to a series of online workshops. These workshops are run over Zoom and generally last around 1 hour 20 minutes. Each starts with an introduction to the topic from the trainer, and there’s always plenty of time to discuss any questions which come up on the day.

How do I know if my child’s school is participating.

What’s on This Term

A 360° Approach to Identity and Wellbeing
with Dean Beadle

Tuesday 27th February at 7:00pm

Are you seeing your child struggle with making sense of who they are in the world? Are you noticing that they are finding it all hard because of attitudes from others and that their mental health has declined?

We are really pleased to have autistic adult Dean Beadle back. In this session Dean explores his journey of the self-acceptance of his neurodivergent identity and wellbeing along with how he learned to advocate for his needs. He will challenge the attitudes that still exist towards autistic people and how to support and boost the wellbeing of neurodivergent young people.

A 360° Approach to Demand Avoidance
with Claire Philips

Wednesday 27th March at 1:15pm

The session will be delivered online through zoom by Claire Phillips an Autism specialist. No diagnosis is required to attend the session - it is available for Parents, Carers and school staff who would like to understand more about supporting a young person (ages 5-16) who may be demand avoidant.

Does your child display resistance to everyday tasks like sleeping, eating, brushing their teeth or going to school? Do they struggle with daily life and expectations? Is the amount they resist a task disproportionate to the task?

Demand Avoidance is a term used for children with a variety of Neurodivergent needs like Autism, ADHD or Dyslexia who are overly resistant to everyday ‘demands’.

This workshop is for parents and school staff and will consider:

  • How Demand Avoidance may present in different children or at different times?

  • Why children may resist doing what appear to be simple tasks?

  • Strategies for Home – how to parent differently when your child has demand avoidance and how to manage siblings needs and expectations.

  • Strategies for School – Communicating and working with children who need ‘demands’ to be managed carefully.

Coffee Support Sessions

Your child doesn't need to have a diagnosis for you to be able to attend the Coffee Support session. In fact, a coffee event is an ideal way to find out what support is available at each stage of your journey and to meet some friendly faces and know you are not alone.

All our coffee support sessions will begin with a short presentation, followed by an opportunity to chat with our peer support team.

This term, the focus of our Coffee Support sessions will be anxiety and difficulties attending school as we know that these are topics which are relevant to so many families. However as with all sessions, there is time after the presentation to discuss your individual situation and any other issues you are facing.
